- Beginning shortly after 9/11, Bush and Cheney actively discourage any investigation of 9/11 and succeed in getting official proceedings put off till the next year.
- In February 2002, a Congressional committee is finally formed: the Congressional joint committee 9/11 inquiry. It suffers months of delays and does not hold its first public hearing until September 18, 2002. It does not give satisfactory results. A report hundreds of pages long was written, but only nine pages of findings and 15 pages of recommendations were released, and those had blacked out sections.
- Victims' families petition for an independent commission. In September 2002, due to immense pressure, Bush/Cheney reverse course and say yes. After some further attempts to quash it, their first move is to appoint cover-up artist Henry Kissinger as head of the commission ("National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States," hereinafter the Kean Commission). This provokes an uproar of protest. Kissinger resigns in December 2002 (the commission has still not gotten started), on the pretext that he "does not want to disclose his business client list".
- Giving the commission minimal funding, Bush appoints other commissioners who have multiple conflicts of interest. There are no commissioners from a totally independent position (no victims' family members or citizen-group members). The appointment of Philip Zelikow -- who collaborated with Condoleeza Rice in the writing of two books -- as Executive Director of the commission is seen by 9/11 family members as proof that the commission is "fixed."Audio interview of Jim Rarey by Kellia Ramares: 2/03: "A look at who the commission members are and what they will NOT be investigating".- 9/11 victims' family members speak at the first public hearings of the Kean commission, 3/31/03 (one and one-half years after 9/11). - Bush limits funding of the commission.
- Ashcroft's "Justice Department" issued a directive barring intelligence officials from being interviewed by the panel without the presence of "minders" at the interviews (a form of intimidation).
- Sept. 2003, the FSC issue a "report card" on the Kean Commission (mostly Ds and Cs).
- Carol Ashley of the FSC's comments re "Bush alone has the final say about what information or evidence becomes public."
- November 2003, White House refuses to cooperate in giving the Commission requested materials. Chair and vice-chair Kean and Hamilton agree to a White House-controlled procedure rather than issuing subpoenas for the material. Zelikow is instrumental in this caving.
- November 2003, Commissioner Max Cleland, who stated “As each day goes by, we learn that this government knew a whole lot more about these terrorists before September 11 than it has ever admitted," is harshly critical of the way things are going, saying that the commision had been "deliberately compromised by the president of the United States." Shortly thereafter, he is reassigned to another post.
- Condoleezza Rice's April 2004 testimony draws fire from Catherine Austin Fitts, former Assistant Secretary of HUD, in her open letter to Rice, titled "You are a Liar." Condoleezza testified in public and under oath -- on the condition that the Commission could not ask any other cabinet-level official to do so.
- Bush finally agrees to testify, but not under oath, only WITH CHENEY, and their testimony is not public. Recordings and transcripts of the private sessions are not allowed, and only notes (censored) remain as a record of the testimony.
- Kristen Breitweiser had repeatedly stated her highest priority was an investigation of the 24 hours of 9/11/01. However, the Kean Commission decided that they would place the emphasis of their investigation elsewhere, going so far as to state that "they did not want to point fingers and place blame" (see March 31, 2003, next to photo of Mindy Kleinberg, at http://www.cooperativeresearch.org/timeline.jsp?timeline=complete_911_timeline&startpos=1350#a033103publichearing [if you get a server error, keep trying]. The Commission maintained this position throughout the hearings.
- Whistleblower Sibel Edmonds silenced by Ashcroft, 7/7/04. Edmonds now is blocked from giving testimony in court on behalf of 9/11 victims' family members, who had subpoenaed her testimony.
- 7/14/04 Sibel Edmonds on record with Daniel Ellsberg, talking about disappointments with the 9/11 Commission, with Congress, with finding noplace to take new whistleblowers who have come to her saying "I have information, where do I go with it?" Also about Ashcroft, and about information being covered up.
- 7/22/04: PRESS RELEASE: 9/11 Citizens Watch releases critique of flawed 9/11 Commission process, in response to the release of the Kean Commission's official document, which is heralded by representatives of Congress as "truly balanced and bipartisan" (notably by Arlen Spector -- shudder).
- 7/22/04 John Judge and Kyle Hence of 9/11 Citizens Watch hold a press conference at the Washington Press Club. It is covered by CSPAN and is more well-attended by the press than the June 2002 press conference which Catherine Austin Fitts and Kyle Hence organized (as UnAnsweredQuestions.org), which CSPAN would not cover.
- 7/23/04 Whistleblower Sibel Edmonds comments on the Report, wondering what happened to her testimony before the commission, of which she can detect no trace: "Puzzled and Curious."
- 8/1/04 Letter From Sibel Edmonds to the 9/11 Commission. This COURAGEOUS letter gets very specific. Here are the opening and closing excerpts:"I find your report seriously flawed in its failure to address serious intelligence issues that I am aware of, which have been confirmed, and which as a witness to the commission, I made you aware of. Thus, I must assume that other serious issues that I am not aware of were in the same manner omitted from your report. These omissions cast doubt on the validity of your report and therefore on its conclusions and recommendations.
..."During its many hearings your commission chose not to ask the questions necessary to unveil the true symptoms of our failed intelligence system. Your Commission intentionally bypassed these severe symptoms, and chose not to include them in its five hundred and sixty seven-page report. Now, without a complete list of our failures pre 9/11, without a comprehensive examination of true symptoms that exist in our intelligence system, without assigning any accountability what so ever, and therefore, without a sound and reliable diagnosis, your commission is attempting to divert attention from the real problems, and to prescribe a cure through hasty and costly measures. It is like attempting to put a gold-lined expensive porcelain cap over a deeply decayed tooth with a rotten root, without first treating the root, and without first cleaning/shaving the infected tooth."

I just want the quote. Every corporate media article I've read has lead with "Osama bin Laden admits he did it ..." and yet none of them quote him saying that. It certainly says that he is a terrorist (again, translation is important with this one particular word) and it says that they target US innocents --- but this already known, this is the whole point of why Osama has been a target of the US before. I want to see ONE quote ... ONE ... that says "I did it" from Osama bin Laden. I say it doesn't exist. But what the hell, we have millions of Americans willing to eat up anything the government feeds them. Who needs truth?

Sorry, this has all become so surreal that I half expect Jack Nicholson to walk in here in a military uniform and start shouting.
Excellent post. These are all questions that I have agonized over myself for the past month. I have presented the very evidence that you have posted to many politically-minded critical-thinkers with whom I associate. Like you, I have yet to come up with much in the way of conclusions.
One detail you missed that you might not know is that there was a telephone conversation between an emergency operator and a flight-attendant on one of the doomed flights. The flight-attendant told the emergency operator the seat numbers that the actual hijackers had been assigned. These seat numbers did not correspond to the reported seat numbers of the alleged hijackers. This was reported on CNN.com but the story has since been removed. I'm certain that you are all but too aware that many media stories that do not fit with the "official story" have been removed from the news logs. This is rather curious in itself. If I find the report I will forward it to you.
There has been a disturbing and recurring pattern in the media coverage so far. Any reports that do not fit with the accepted version of events are systematically dropped. To me this suggests collusion between the authorities and the media.
I wish you luck in your endeavour and I will assist in any way that I can but I fear that if you get close enough to the truth you may have an unexpected career change from amateur investigative journalist to worm farmer.

... The "conspiracy theories" Bush is referring to similarly have three basic premises and many divergent subsets. The first is that the attack was known about (and possibly, planned) by various elements of the U.S. government before 9/11 and was allowed to take place in order to bring about certain conditions, including the suspension of our guaranteed civil liberties. The second premise is that even if bin Laden and the al Queda network based in Afghanistan were immediately responsible for the attack that those supporting, funding and protecting them are not for the most part based in Afghanistan but are in fact closely connected to the Bush administration and to the allies President Bush has taken such efforts to rally to our side. The third premise is that a U.S. built oil pipeline through Afghanistan which has been in the planning stages for more than a decade is the real goal of the war and that a U.S. invasion of Afghanistan was in the works long before September 11th.

"United States special forces have stumbled across yet another hastily abandoned building that housed the headquarters of the Al Qaeda International Network. Scattered all over the premises were documents that clearly indicated that Al Qaeda was planning more attacks around the world.
"Amongst the huge amount of highly incriminating evidence found was a training manual entitled "International Terrorism for Dummies". There was also a printed map entitled "London Hop-on Hop-off" showing prominent landmarks that could possibly be terrorist targets. Scribbled at the bottom of this map were some Arabic words which have been translated by State Department officials. The translation reads: "Meet granny at Waterloo station at 11". Security experts agree that the word waterloo means 'a final defeat' and could be a coded signal for terorrist action and the '11' could be a reference to September 11th.
"The most significant find was a video tape showing Ossama Bin Laden and his colleagues revelling in the unfortunate encounter of President George Bush with a pretzel. Bin Laden is heard saying that they had been planning for very long to develop a pretzel that had exactly the right shape to lodge in the throat and create some discomfort. Bin Laden said (while laughing gleefully): "We never expected the infidel Bush to faint......this was far more than we planned....we really (unintelligible) him up this time."
