Subject: Thanks to Staff for Helping to Increase Listener Awareness of the
Crisis
Date: Wed, 14 Feb 2001
Dear Jim and staff at KPFA,
This message is to the staff at KPFA who are working to alert listeners to the
danger KPFA and Pacifica are in from the maneuverings of the Pacifica Board,
from the CPB, from Epstein, Becker and Green and from those they have hired
- the Bessie Wash's, the Steve Yasko's, the Utrice Leid's, Mark Schubb's, Garland
Ganter's, Lou Hankins's et al.
Listener awareness is increasing dramatically as a result, with no loss of programming
punch. In fact the coverage has been inspiring, and inclusion of the listeners
in the struggle is absolutely necessary to enlist them in supporting KPFA directly
and indirectly by supporting the lawsuits, by focusing awareness on the PNB
meeting in Houston, the bylaws changes, the threats to Amy Goodman and to anyone
who speaks out at any of the other stations about the power grab from above.
Please consider more regular programming about the crisis. Even five minutes
a program is an enormous help to communicating some of the issues which, while
at times complex, are very comprehensible if portrayed as such. The diverse
listeners require regularity of discussion so that the large and disparate population
who tune in to KPFA at different times of the day and for different programming
are apprised that there is a crisis, that there are issues and that they can
do something about it - and in fact must do something about it or risk losing
the resource that is KPFA.
The Listener Groups such as the Coalition for a democratic Pacifica, North Bay
for KPFA, the Marin Tri-County Group and others have noticed and appreciated
the increased coverage of the crisis. Some discussion makes more discussion
easier. People have a basis to communicate because they hear it on the airwaves
which must be used to save the station. When David Landau and Lewis Sawyer attended
the most recent Coalition for a democratic Pacifica meeting in Berkeley, it
they were warmly welcomed and it was there that an overwhelming majority of
the 80+ attendees in a straw vote indicated they wished to hear regular news
coverage of the struggle. Again, thanks - do keep it up and do tap the resources
of the listener activists as often as you wish. We will be glad to help write
announcements, provide guests and work to frame issues so that we can all understand
how the community and the station can continue this fight and this movement.
We're here.
