| 3/8/98: It has been estimated that 95% of the people who will buy organic food in the next year have still not heard the real story behind the new proposed national organic standard. This has to change if there is to be any hope of saving things. We can't just assume that "This is too ridiculous, it could never become law" and do nothing. | |||||
| The most effective action that you can take is to telephone your three Congresspersons. Ask whoever answers the phone that you are calling to find out your congress person's position on the USDA's implementation of the National Organic Program. Tell them that you are a voter in their constituency. They may not know the congress person's position on this issue, so ask them to find out for you and to call you back. You may need to call several times to find out the information. Use this special number to call toll-free! (Here are some hints on things to say.) | |||||
| Write letters! See the sample
letters page. Then visit the USDA
directly and submit a comment online. |

| Great "Take Action"
ideas from Save Organics Foundation, including a good flyer to post.
Check the Pure Foods Campaign's Actions page, and they also have a downloadable/printable flyer on this page. |

| If your local health store's display about this issue is not so prominent
that it CANNOT BE MISSED, then they need to do more. Talk to them about
it -- I've found them to be receptive and glad that the customers care.

letter to health stores. |

here are some sample "announcements"
of the type you could pass on to them. |

| Get others involved! Groups such as Buddhists, vegetarians (are vegetables
with animal genes "kosher"?), and people with chemical sensitivities
or allergies should be particuarly concerned -- let them know and/or tell
me e-mail, Web, or Usenet ways to contact them. If you know of any
online place where this issue is being discussed, or should be, let me
know; I am trying to find them. |
